A long candlelit wedding table dressed with greenery and glassware inside a timber barn

Ines & Rowan

We are marrying at Halcyon Barn, out where the fields run flat and the sky does most of the decorating. Everything you need for the day is on this page.

The order of the day

One barn, one long afternoon

Nothing here is formal enough to worry about. Times are honest rather than optimistic, so you can plan trains, naps and babysitters around them.

  1. 1:15 pm

    Doors and lemonade

Come through the field gate and follow the lanterns. There will be cold drinks in the courtyard and someone who knows where you are sitting.

  2. 2:00 pm

    The ceremony

Twenty-five minutes under the open end of the barn. If the weather turns, the whole thing simply moves six metres inside and nobody gets wet.

  3. 2:40 pm

    Photographs and the long table

Group photos happen quickly by the hedgerow while everyone else starts on the sharing boards. Please eat before us; we have done this order of events the other way around and it was worse.

  4. 4:30 pm

    Dinner, seated

Three courses at one continuous table. Speeches sit between the main and the pudding and are, we promise, firmly rationed.

  5. 7:30 pm

    Music in the hay barn

A four-piece band until ten, records afterwards. The floor is swept concrete, which is excellent for dancing and unkind to thin heels.

  6. 11:45 pm

    Last song and soup

Hot soup and bread before the final track. Lifts leave from the top of the lane; the barn is dark and locked by half past midnight.

We picked a field with more sky than anything else

Halcyon Barn sits on the high side of the valley with nothing between it and the weather. That is the whole idea: long light, open doors, and a room that smells of hay and dinner at the same time.

Travel & stay

The practical half of the invitation

Four things worth reading before you book anything. If you are travelling a distance, say so on your RSVP and we will help you sort the rest.

The venue

Halcyon Barn

A restored grain barn with a courtyard, a hay barn for dancing and a ramp at every entrance. The ceremony, dinner and dancing all happen within a hundred paces.

Staying nearby

Where to sleep

The village fifteen minutes away has a small inn and a handful of guest rooms, and they fill early for June weekends. We have asked them to hold rooms under our names until March.

Getting there

Trains and the lane

The nearest station is a twenty-minute drive; our shuttle meets the early afternoon arrivals. The final approach is a single-track lane, so allow a few unhurried minutes at the end.

Late night & after

Sunday morning

  • Shuttle loops to the village at 10:15 pm and after the last song.
  • Cars may stay in the field overnight and be collected before noon.
  • Breakfast in the courtyard from nine on Sunday for anyone still around.
  • No gifts, please — your journey is the expensive part.

Questions

Asked already, answered here

These are the actual questions people have put to us since the save-the-dates went out. If yours is not here, add it to the message box on your RSVP.

Can I bring a guest?

Your invitation lists the names we have room for at the table. If you would like to bring someone who is not named, ask on your RSVP and we will tell you honestly whether the seating allows it.

What about a gift?

There is no list and nothing to buy. We have lived together for six years and own a frankly absurd number of mugs. Come, eat, dance late.

I have a dietary requirement

Write it in the menu field on the RSVP form. The kitchen cooks vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free versions of every course as standard, and will handle allergies separately.

How long is the ceremony?

About twenty-five minutes, with two short readings and no hymns. Seats are held until five to two, after which you will be quietly slotted in at the back.

Is the barn accessible?

Yes. Every building has a level or ramped entrance, the accessible washroom is off the courtyard, and we can reserve seating near the front and beside the table — note it on your RSVP.

What if it rains all day?

Then we get better photographs. Everything except the drinks half hour already happens under cover, and the courtyard has a canopy for the part that does not.

Can we stay at the venue?

The barn has no rooms, so everyone sleeps in the village or drives back. Tell us on your RSVP if you need a shuttle seat and we will keep one for you.

When do you need to hear from me?

By 3 April 2027. The kitchen needs final numbers that week, and after that we genuinely cannot add a chair to the table.
